I've never really done and unboxing before as I saw no need for most reels found in the market. There was always some resource on them whether in the form of tackle reviews, videos and so on. That was not true for the Daiwa Ishidai Genpaoh 40 though. There were only bits and pieces on the Internet and not even any promotional videos and information. I'm going to be using the Genpao for night bottom fishing (cracking heavy sinkers) so don't ask me about using this reel for conventional jigging or slow fall jigging. You might wanna take a look at the Reel Spa (Calvin) video in which an Ishidai Genpaoh is being tuned up to do those. The reel should also be an excellent choice for wreck fishing due to its drag (15kg) and also very high retrieve per crank (111 cm). Hi Fishing Kakis, i would like to introduce this hook to you by Owner... It's a great hook and i have been using it for years. It's the Owner Aki Twist Bait hook... It's thick, strong and very sharp. Excellent if you need excellent hooks for the monsters. It's thick but not too thick and hook setting is great... It was first introduced to me by Roger a.k.a Sticko... I have been using the size 2/0 for light offshore baiting and even as jigging hooks. The bigger sizes can be used for heavy bottom fishing or even hooks for poppers etc. Compared to the Owner General purpose hooks which are so much thinner, the Owner Aki Twist has not failed me yet... My 35kg Shovelnose ray was landed with an Owner Aki Twist size 2/0 hook lol....

Hey fishing kakis, i recently borrowed a Bobbin from Jamie. It's from Shout Fishermen's tools. It's to help me master the PR knot but somehow i forgotten how to tie the knot again... Okay guys, here's some general tackle talk. I have been fishing for a long time now to have seen the Dupont Leader in action but nowadays fishing leaders are very widespread and there are many different types like Fluorocarbon, Nylon and even hi stretch leaders... Here is some basic introduction which may come useful to beginners. What is a leader? A leader line is a length of fishing line (usually monofilament) which you attach to your main fishing line (usually braided). Anglers tie the leader to the lure they are using. In a baiting context, the leader may be your terminal rig like your Apollo Rig (Paternoster). Leaders are stiffer, stronger and can have different properties to suit the angler and terrain. If you are using braided line, it is definitely a must to use monofilament leader as braided line is very visible, it is not abrasion resistant and it is not stretch resistant. Ok guys i guess i'll be trying to go into the art of lure making lol so today i had some free time i thought why not make a popper for Sailfish and Toman... so i grabbed a water bottle to make a fishing lure called a popper. It was done in 5 mins... And cost less than a dollar. Can't wait to test this thing out... Don't laugh at me... Will make improvements like wiring, cuphead, rattles etc etc in future lol it will be version 2... The good thing about the water bottle is that you can just adjust any weight you want by adding weight into the water bottle via the cap... hehe Any suggested names for the water bottle popper??? Right not it's WBP Version 1 hahaha!!!

Ok guys, i'm not sure if you are updated but Daiso at Jurong East IMM has brought in a good selection of new fishing items. I guess they are responding to the good feedback from their previous lures. Now they have brought in treble hooks(although i don't know how strong they are), jig heads, rubbers, some long profile slim minnows and new egi! Their usual crankbait, rattling vibe and small popper series now has a good range of colours. It's great to see this happening... hopefully they will have a rod and reel section next kekeke.. Oh yeah, i'm slowly trying to get rid of my squid jigs but i couldn't help but buy these ... too nice to resist omg... Oh ya in case you're wondering, Daiso squid jigs do work... Just want to share with you guys this invention that my friend DIY himself. He was pissed off that gimbal belts cost so much and they are so bulky so he invented this version for himself. It's easy to use, easy to store and it works! Don't need to wear it even... just slot it in! Great invention.... good on him...

I was shocked when my dad expressed interest in going to TP(Tanjung Pinang) for some bottom fishing action. He said he was following his friend and asked me along too. Since it will be a trip that i won't be paying for, i agreed! Well that leaves the tackle preparation to me and i found the best and cheapest stuff around for us to get prepared. I got myself 2 overhead lever drag reels for bottom fishing. You always want overhead reels around as we have to crank the sinkers from a depth... I got myself the Pioneer 10 trolling reel and Shimano Charter Special 2000 LD. I was surprised with the two reels as i fully suspected that i needed to change the drags to HT drags... but both in both reels the drags were awfully strong. The charter special is definitely a workhorse but time will tell whether the Pioneer can stand up to abuse. Having good drag is one thing... whether the components can stand up to the abuse is another... We'll be using both reels for trolling and bottom ...

Hi everyone, I'm just back from my light jigging and bottom fishing trip at Pekan seas. A pity the outboard broke down on the second day if not the catch would have been better. We hit our target fishes of Ebek and i even got a good monster surprise on light tackle. Will be posting it up soon but here's a mini post first. I got myself a new reel and i will be using it for light jigging/popping. It's a very affordable and decent looking reel. I admit i look for a sturdy bail arm in a reel and Ryobi reels have good strong frames but they are a little heavy. Here's my new toy! Gear Ratio: 5.0:1 Weight 305g 5 Ball Bearings Line Capacity (PE/No.): PE4-140M, PE5-120M Drag: 5kg Full aluminum metal body. Full metal spool with carbon fiber. Machined round knob power handle. I had a reader requesting some pictures of my NFF so here they are. They are not done up nicely but i hope i would be able to provide some idea of what an NFF looks like. NFF stands for no frills fly and the main aim of this fly is to be extremely expendable, easy/fast to do up and using the least materials possible. Of course, it still works! So far i usually spend around 20-40 seconds doing up one NFF. NFFs are usually used in conjunction with the spin fly rig for conventional spinning rods. An array of NFF. Can you spot the sweet wrapper, rubber band and cable tie NFF?

I'm a big fan of Daiso lures and egi squid jigs. I have long heard of Daiso coming to Bukit Panjang Plaza and i finally visited it last week! And yup they had a fishing section with most of the stuff being the same ones from IMM Jurong East. They have more new stuff though... But what i loved most was the new Egi Squid Jigs which came in natural colours. They had a nice colourful range of plastic squid jigs too but I didn't get those... These Daiso Yamashita copies will be excellent for Sibu shy squids during day time! Luckily for me, I grabbed the last 2 pcs of 2.5... I'll be scouting around for more of these...

After getting myself my Calstar Grafighter 600xl, I've thought of the possible reels to pair it with... I've considered the new Daiwa Saltist LD 20 two speed and some other good value for money yet excellent reels. I've finally arrived at my decision and that was to get the Accurate Boss Magnum 197 low speed... It seemed a little light in the drag department when using my hands to gauge the drag but after loading in some line, i found the line payout to be smooth and strong. PRETTY and Compact That's how compact it is... it could get a little bit of getting used to for fat thumbs like me. It was a tough decision but i went for the 197 as i thought i needed a little something. The Calstar 600xl is easily under-rated at 10 - 25lbs and being the sort of rod that it is, i will be pushing it to its limits during trips. It's currently loaded with some 150m of PE3 Varivas on a little mono backing until i get new line. It should be a sweet combination with my Cals...
