Hirasuzuki fishing experience in Jeju I've never thought I'd be fishing in Korea all my life. Seriously! So when the opportunity to do some fishing in Jeju popped up, I couldn't say no. It was a completely gut based decision based on the goal that was to eat the korean hirasuzuki also known as blackfin seabass. I heard that the fight of the fish wasn't that great but I was very curious about eating it! I couldn't make it for this trip but the live updates from the guys were very exciting. They finished their prawns after lunch and had to go to the farm to top up prawns.  Beautiful snapper. Who says jigging not possible at Changi? We hereby named him ang cho kiat~! Baiters didn't xia suay also lah Kiat was the hero on this trip, scoring a good sized ang cho aka golden snapper on jig. Purist jigging style came up tops! 

It's been some time since we hit a decent haul off Changi waters. So this one really felt sweet. The most effective fishing method was fishing right off the bottom with tenya and bottom hugging techniques.

Behold... on this trip, we had purposely sought out sagais because we were bored and wanted to just harvest fish. We were so desperate and only bought 1/2 kg of live prawns which we didn't really use anyway.  Lawrence the ang gao whisperer Ah Bao's "feather" Gao on jig! Caught it on feather! Strangely though, we caught all sorts of interesting reef fish before the "sagai" fishing started. Ah Bao even caught a coral trout on what he called "mao" or feather. We also used sabiki rigs to catch plenty of baby yellowtail barracuda aka kamasu. These are super tasty by the way, but it is a story for another day. When the current was about to pick up, off we want for sagai. Sam was fairly confident and recommended "long-line" and sabiki jigging. Long-line usually refers to a very long horizontal presentation (think 4ft of leader) with a feathered jig or hook at the end. One would just let it flow out and impart a jig stop motion to imitate flappin

Man, this trip is radical on many levels. I don't even know how to describe it. If you thought this Desaru fishing trip was already kind of weird, this one came out tops. Basically, only one spanish mackeral aka tenggiri was landed, one got busted at boatside. After that some Malaysian boat got jealous and drove straight into the school we were fishing at and then we ended up at a Durian stall. "Net, net! Drag on the beach. Woohoo! Uncle Du, you are amazing!" I was super far when I heard the commotion and I ran over as fast as I could. When I got there, the scene was a little of relief and amazement. I think Ah Du also didn't believe it. After 5 years of trying, he finally got what he wanted – a wild barramundi from the shoreline. This, after missing a gigantic one on topwater pencil just half an hour ago. We got down to the beach to properly land the fish and took a few photos for keepsake. Had a few laughs and texted Sherwin to rub it in. Master Du with a 60cm beauty Push out technique used by YPs to exaggerate fish size.  Very useful if you want the fish in focus. Wonderful day to be out at sea today as a friend brought his kid out for some fishing. The lad is totally into fishing and has wonderful sea legs. Bite rate wasn't that great but we had some fun fishing with Ah Fong. Those who know me will know that I am passionate about bringing kids out fishing but through the parents or guardians as it is more sustainable. Bringing kids fishing or teaching them fishing also shouldn't be about profit making, no matter how well you argue the sustainability case. Some things are better off like that. King Chong built a new platform for catches. Extremely useful! Merchong! It’s been too long (yes it even rhymes) since we had a full-fledged fishing trip there. Merchong is actually situated at Nenasi, Malaysia. It’s after Rompin and just before Pekan. For the unacquainted Singaporean, fishing spots between Rompin, Pekan and Merchong are generally the same so they share the same fishing seasons and fishing styles. Many times, those fishing these areas may actually go to Tioman for fishing. Fishing is done in the wee hours for best fishing and so that they do not need to compete with too many boats. It is important to know where you are fishing exactly and where you are launching from. Boats from the areas above generally only have fishing licenses to fish the Pahang area and not the mersing or below area (e.g. Sibu, Sedili, Desaru) as these are considered under Johor Bahru.
