Superb barramundi taken on light rod and SS700 reel! The weather and tide looked good tonight and we were thinking it would be an awesome night for sampan fishing. In fact, Jeff hooked up a decent barramundi on his first cast (and he also called it a catfish midway through the fight). The fish was taken right outside the restaurant - always an underrated spot and newbies often say, "huh? so near only?" but when the line peels out and the fish gets landed, different story.  We landed another two fish (a baby kim and ack which we released) through the night before we gave up. Missed another one. It swallowed the bait but didn't hook up correctly. All I got back was some rough leader. Long time never go "Sampan Fishing" already. In fact, my last trip doing it was in 2017 where I caught a decent size mangrove jack (the red red big big kind). I'll state it quite clearly: If you're looking to catch a decent barramundi, a sampan fishing trip is the way to go. No, I am not talking about those Frankenstein kind of barramundi that belong to the kelong nets but the kind that still actively chases large schools of mullet.  Some basic information about sampan trips: The fishing is around the Sembawang area. We often get funny stares while launching our fishing kayaks in Singapore at Watercross. Bewildered onlookers or surfcasters (fishing from the beach) would often check in on us and ask us many questions. I have to admit, it sometime felt like we were like an elite bunch of fishermen - something like the Seals or Commandos of fishing especially with all our macho face buffs and arm socks. Jokes aside, what is it to really launch a kayak and go out to fish in Singapore waters? For a start, many of us store our kayaks at Watercross Pasir Ris and although it's just literally a stone's throw from the beach (where we launch), it's actually tiring work just to get to the water! That's where one fine day I decided to take some footage of what really happens. Many things happen but in general - We have to get the kayak out, rig it up, get it to the water and finally launch. It's not everyday that you get to go Kayak Fishing in Singapore. Perhaps that's the reason why many are still ambivalent when it comes to going Kayak Fishing. To make things worse, it's also not everytime that you go out Kayak Fishing in Singapore and get a good fish! Oh goody! The boy in me could finally try out real kayak fishing in Singapore as a friend kindly agreed to let me have a try out in his Kayak! Kayak fishing is consistently picking up pace in Singapore and so far, the authorities look to be very relaxed and supportive of the small community of Kayak fishing anglers in Singapore. I hopped into my friend's native watercraft Kayak at Pasir Ris beach as Boatman Shawn (who also bought his own kayak) led me out on a special experience. As we "launched" (a term used for getting our kayaks into the water from the beach) from the beach, we saw other kayakers taking to the water - some of which are stored at Pasir Ris beach watercross itself. Great to see local businesses support the community! Now, the term "launch" may seem a little heavy but I can assure you, it is no mean feat to "launch"... well except my friend lent me his kayak wheels too and off we go! Fishing the waters of Changi was a very familiar ball game for me and when I had the chance to independently fish it together with Boatman Shawn, it was a different kind of feeling to fishing - it was also the proving of certain concepts/assumptions/theories. I considered it as a test of sorts to see how much I gleaned from my countless Changi Offshores with the experienced traditional local boatmen such as Ah Chong, Ah Fong, Ah Long and Ah Soon etc. If you consider the experiences with James, Uncle Soh, Ah Bee and so on, it adds up to even more experience points! Here's a little post about some Inflatable boat fishing with Shawn's Kairos and Kiat yet again with his Hobie... As usual, we set off from our usual grounds early with our usual routine being Yishun's Sincere Tackle Live prawns being our first stop in the morning. Sincere Tackle is a great convenient tackle store if you're looking to stock up on accessories or baits early in the morning! The fact that they open at 6am on weekends is a great convenience for kayak or self boat fishing kakis like myself. An early day! Was this our secret spot? Anyway, it was now proven from a few outings that Chermins respond to the downgoing tides extremely well and during incoming tides, it was the grunter or guhood that was more prominent. That was the case today as I had a good grunter in the morning drifting the drop offs. A good sized grunter! Tide settled and kiat got a stargazer aka kuku fish!  As the tide slowly settled, the sites stopped too and we continued working...

One of the lonely weekends, the gang of 3 kakis took to the water again. With our odd combination of Kiat in his Hobie i9S and Boatman Shawn's Kairos Kaboat, we once again proved that finding good fish while kayak fshing in Singapore is definitely possible. With Kayak fishing, fishing spots are unlimited and you do not need a fishing charter or paypond to plan your fishing trip. We launched from Sembawang Park again which is a popular launching area now due to the beach being very close to the parking area. There is even some stairs down to the beach which solo kayakers can make use of. kiat and Hobie i9s fully rigged with mirage drive and hobie life jacket Shawn with his customized rod holder and kaboat Kiat impressed all the newbie kayakers taking their one star kayak course at sembawang again with his Hobie mirage drive which uses leg power!
