Eging Rod for Offshore Fishing?

Image
I've been quite bored of fishing recently because it's just so predictable. It has come to a point where it's just about time and abit of luck. But... this guy called "AB" made it interesting again by showing me how to use an eging rod for offshore fishing!  So on my last trip I tried it out... and I think I will be trying it out again fairly soon.  Some thoughts...  It is not true that you will get bullied or it is not strong enough. I was able to handle up to size 4 sinkers, 40g to 60g jigs and 40g sinking minnows. I was using a Shimano Vanquish 3000 with 10lbs braid, 40lbs fluorocarbon leader. If required, I can still get the fish up easily. Jigging and casting on the rod is actually not tiring. In fact it was fun!

Fishing for Big Grouper in Changi Waters, Singapore

Image
If you're into the local fishing scene, you must have heard of fishing for giant groupers (gao tun) or tong gas (how the local fishing community in Singapore and Malaysia calls it) in Singapore. It's an interesting form of fishing that takes much patient, perseverance and skills. Personally, I have never caught any grouper above 10kg in local waters! Thus, my experience with a recent 8kg hybrid grouper at Changi waters on Ah Fong's boat shocked me because of how hard the fish pulled. It does seem that hybrid groupers fight much better than their orange spotted cousins and are also much more sneakier! Tackle used: Zenaq MYS Fooketo Twitch 59-3 Shimano Ocea Jigger 2000 NRPG with YGK Jigman X4 PE 5 Shockleader #20 Seaguar FXR Fluorocarbon Biteleader #16 Seaguar FXR Fluorocarbon Hooks 2 x Lions Fishing cheap hooks Description of fight: Fight was not easy. First the boat went over a hill so it was shallow followed by a downslope. At the end of the downslope though was something ...

Famous Singapore Fishing Charter Captain Jimmy Lim loses a good fish on Micro Jig

Image
To be honest with you, this video has very little educational stuff to learn from but we just love the look of Changi Offshore Fishing boatman and fishing guru Jimmy Lim when he loses his fish amidst all our bantering! Serves you right for using light tackle and micro jigs to get the fish! Whahaha... But what a hook up in dirty muddy water at Changi! Shows us there is still hope for fishing in Singapore waters!

Underwater Fishing Videos

Image
Posting catch reports have always been done using pictures but the next generation of fishing catch reports will be no doubt in video. The joy of video is that we can have the sound (reel screaming), how the angler fights the fish and of course the whole environment. The smile of the angler fighting the fish is always one to be rememberd. Recently, i have been doing more fishing video CRs although they are not so professionally done up because i probably have to juggle between fishing and video-ing during a trip! It's hard to get the video footage when the fish actually attacks the bait/jig and most footage is after during hookup. There are a good number of authors/bloggers slowly moving onto video CRs but we definitely will see more video CRs soon... Anyway, the next step of fishing video CRs is none other than underwater fishing videos where we capture the fishes in their own environment. My good friend Shawn had purchased a cheap underwater video camera sometime back and ...

40lbs Cobia Light Jigging Video

Image
Hi guys, i finally got the video from FS. Here's the video of my 40lbs Cobia on light jigging. Tackle used was a Eupro PE 1-3 jigging rod, Daiwa Caldia Kix 3500 with Powerpro 20lbs braided line. jig used was a smith forcast 60gm. Hook on jig was owner SJ41. Fishing in Malaysia is fun! It's definitely better than fishing in Singapore! Part 1 is a little jerky! Part 2 is very vocal! hahaha!

Giant Grouper Caught At Ah Fatt Kelong at Sibu

Image
Amazing catch from Sibu Kelong... Wonder what bait he used? Funny thing is that the grouper was kinda "dumb" and didn't try to run into the stakes or structures. Well, that's fishing i guess. I'll be heading to Pekan again tomorrow night. Let's see what the trip holds. We'll be doing popping/jigging for 1 day at Nail Island(tie ding dao) and bottom baiting/jigging for parrots and ebeks on another day. Let's hope the boat does not break down again!

Motoro Ray at Pasir Ris Farmway 3

Image
Another trip was made to Farmway 3 after the New Year Trip... This time with Halley on board. I was going to let my light tackle get some feel of fish again so I brought along a Shimano Bassrise 4-8lbs paired with a cheap yellow reel (can't forget brand) with 6lbs powerpro braided line. It was fun using the bass rise but I almost couldn't set in the hook when the fish took the bait. When the fish came close, the lifting power of the rod was good and I could control the fish. A short video on the fight It was a slow day and we only managed a few fishes. Momok managed his first freshwater stingray though... a Motoro Ray... Congrats!

River Monsters Season 2 Is OUT!

I'm sure almost everyone would have heard of the River Monsters series on TV. National Geographic Channel is giving fish and fishing lovers a treat by supplying us with relevant shows. There's Monster Fish too. In fact there will be another fishing show opening this month! Anyway, below titles are for reference so you can search for the series on Youtube or Torrent it. I find season 2's episode 2 very relevant to Singapore Anglers as we have the Toman as a very common fish in our waters. But then again, the show's extremely exaggerating and even labels Tomans as poisonous... and Human eating?! I guess it's to make the non fishing friends excited! Hehe! Season 1 Titles Episode 1 Piranha ( Piranha , Amazon River Dolphin , Payara , Armoured catfish) Episode 2 Killer Catfish ( Goonch catfish , Mugger Crocodile ) Episode 3 Alligator gar ( Alligator gar , American Alligator) Episode 4 European Maneater ( Wels catfish ) Episode 5 Amazon Assassins ( Arapaima ) ...

Extreme Fishing With Robson Green

I've been following the Extreme Fishing series for quite some time now and one of the main reasons that I've been glued to it is that there is something different in every episode. This crazy fella goes all over the world and uses all sorts of fishing methods from kite fishing, noodling, archery fishing, spear fishing and so on. Of course, there is still conventional fishing being used! Another aspect of the show that i like most is that its a show that even non fishing lovers will appreciate as he goes all over the world and samples different cultures. There's not only non stop fishing but Robson stops over and samples different things which include fried flys and other strange foods. Good commentary and good videoing makes the show quite the documentary. I've covered season 1 & 2 and am currently on season 3... Fishing in Kenya! Find out more in his website... Here's a clip of him fighting the Giant Thailand Stingray

Discovery Channel's River Monsters

Hi everyone, have not been fishing lately due to being super busy. I went bashing today without my rod and found a few suitable spots. Tomans could be seen cruising the waters like Arowana and darting off in another direction with the bubble trail slowly moving. It seems its the Toman brooding season now because i saw green/purple Tomans hanging around the area but they were not feeding actively but cruising around. There were also a few new batches of small red Toman fries around small mamas. Anyway, i'm currently hooked onto Discovery Channel's River Monsters. They are showing this show now and the current episode if the Wels Catfish in Spain. But i missed many episodes and can't wait for the others so i'm gonna go get the videos. The size for all episodes are quite big but ill be borrowing AG's HD... kekeke... Go to discovery to watch some previews! http://animal.discovery.com/videos/river-monsters-most-dangerous/ Btw this is damn interesting too. Heli f...
