Eging Rod for Offshore Fishing?

Image
I've been quite bored of fishing recently because it's just so predictable. It has come to a point where it's just about time and abit of luck. But... this guy called "AB" made it interesting again by showing me how to use an eging rod for offshore fishing!  So on my last trip I tried it out... and I think I will be trying it out again fairly soon.  Some thoughts...  It is not true that you will get bullied or it is not strong enough. I was able to handle up to size 4 sinkers, 40g to 60g jigs and 40g sinking minnows. I was using a Shimano Vanquish 3000 with 10lbs braid, 40lbs fluorocarbon leader. If required, I can still get the fish up easily. Jigging and casting on the rod is actually not tiring. In fact it was fun!

Back to Eging at Punggol End Jetty Eging Spot

Image
I'm finally eging (also known as squid fishing) again thanks to the boredom brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. In fact, I suppose I accidentally rediscovered eging again thanks to one of the Southern Island offshore trips were we went to Pulau Hantu to hide from the storm. I got bullied by a squid there and got itchy again... Went to hide but got a squid instead? Yamashita rattle egi oh k 2.5 The eging scene is kind of different now from when I just started. Now there seems to be many models of squid jigs and many specific ones just for different purposes like sight casting, shallow, deep and so on. But for me I still firmly believe in a few things which are sound/vibration, action and contrasting colours for different occasions. In general you can use pink, orange, green egi for night time or day time. If day time gets difficult due to shy squid, you can try silver, grey, dark red, brown or gold which are also known as natural colours. Went to Punggol End Jetty to try out som...

Bringing Kids Fishing: Punggol End Jetty

Image
Had some free time during the school holidays so thought I would bring some of my church kids out fishing. Certain factors to consider when choosing a spot and eventually I decided on a "free" spot since pond fishing was costly. We chose Punggol End Jetty since it was nearby, accessible and relatively a safe place to do some relax fishing. There were also quite a bit of small fish to entertain the kids although I think other places like Labrador Park or Changi Boardwalk may be better fishing spots for kids because there are more small fish. After fishing we went to the nearby Punggol Settlement to have lunch... Perfect day! Oh yes, I also managed to do some eging and caught a nice green eye squid during the day. Hahaha... somethings just never change...

Eging at Punggol End Jetty with the famous Fisherrmanfan

Image
Can I still do eging? Can I still catch a squid? These were the questions running around in my head as I went for a last minute eging trip with the famous Fisherrmanfan. Fisherrmanfan (also known as Yifan) is going eging with me for his very first time and I was supposedly the "pro". Problem was that I haven't been shore eging for maybe almost a decade! Fished out some of very old eging jigs from my storage space and realised I was already out of stock for my favourite Yamashita egi jigs. Ahhh never mind, I still had trusty Lamses, Cofita and Technic cheap squid jigs. I bought these for 50 cents to a dollar in the past!  I still had my cheap egis! No eging rod and reel? Ahhh never mind, brought my micro jigging setup (St Croix 6-12lbs and Shimano Vanquish C3000). Eging was still the same. Squids still come at certain timing. Punggol End Jetty still has some squids. But I guess the season hasn't really reached. The eging ah laus were still there but I was shocked to...

Eging (Fishing for Squids) at Labrador Park Breakwater and Ramp

Image
Eging has been picking up popularity in Singapore for quite some time now but it probably has already reached the peak although some tackles shops in Singapore are bringing in hybrid squid jig lures which have treble hooks on them. Eging hot spots are an open secret in Singapore since squid habitats and suitable eging spots are easily identified. Squids are also less valued than fishes and chances are, you will always have ample squid to catch! The squid fishing spots in Singapore are confined to mostly the South (Harbourfront and Marina), North-East (Punggol) and East coast (Bedok Jetty, Changi, Tanah Merah). Other very famous in Singapore are our Southern Islands like Sentosa, Pulau Hantu, St John's... Egi anglers haven't really had much success in the North or West coasts though there are the occasional reports of cuttlefish aka baktao. Perhaps it's the salinity and clarity of the water. Squids tend to love clear, salty water rather than muddy ones... I've...

KTM Resort Eging!

Image
It's been a long time since i went eging but the long wait is over! My family wanted a short getaway at KTM Resort, Batam over the weekends and i was glad to accomodate them and plan the trip. This time, we planned the trip with a local Singapore travel agent - Eng Seng Travel service since we could claim the fee. The trip came with a free tour on the second day and i mildly enjoyed myself. We visited Ralph Lauren polo tee shops, Golden Prawn Seafood, Kueh lapis batam factory and stuff like that. And of course if you go to KTM Resort, you have to visit Nagoya mall so we went there as well. Food at KTM Resort was a little disappointing at KTM Resort as they didn't seem to have the old menu. There was no more kung bao chicken and the crab meat in the asparagus soup was the imitation type! Anyway, the Avocado juice is still good! They have also upgraded their fishing area with railings now and they have spruced up the whole place. Some pictures of the spruced up areas! ...

Punggol End Beach And Jetty

Image
Punggol End Beach and Jetty used to be one of my favourite eging spots in Singapore. In the past, it used to be less crowded, full of squids and it was a place where i would go have a few casts when i was stressed or needed some fresh air... But now it has transformed into a more developed area and it is packed with people! Since there were a few days of sun, i went out to check Punggol End for some squids but i went home early because it was too crowded and noisy. No longer can I do my eging in peace... There were kids running around, shouting and screaming... Big malay families camping at the beach and all over the area... There was still a great number of people coming to fish for squids though... but they left one by one as the wind got stronger... The style of eging has changed alot in these 4 years. 4 years back, these ah laos used only slow crank to fish for the squids. Nowadays, you see them whipping their rods like some pro Japanese wannabe eging angler... Some even bought e...
