When I got there, the scene was a little of relief and amazement. I think Ah Du also didn't believe it. After 5 years of trying, he finally got what he wanted – a wild barramundi from the shoreline. This, after missing a gigantic one on topwater pencil just half an hour ago. We got down to the beach to properly land the fish and took a few photos for keepsake. One of the best fishing spots in Singapore can be found SAF Yacht Club, Sembawang . In fact, because it is a restricted fishing area, the fish population is healthy. Is fishing allowed there? You can fish at the jetty but do beware of boaters and be safe. Members and guests can fish at the jetty while public can pay a small fee to fish. Do keep the place clean though. How to fish there? Most of the fishing can be done with live bait. You can drop down your bait or cast it out. Usually the fish that most people target are the barramundi (seabass/kbl), grouper, snapper and mangrove jacks. Sometimes you can also get ladyfish, tarpon and catfish. Few hours of casting. All fish are not wasted. "Very long never go fishing leh... heightened alert coming, cannot fish already" followed by "Come let's go!" When you have such fishing kakis like Jeff, a short few hours fishing getaway is always possible. We picked up some prawns and drinks for sharing and we were good to go. Casting live prawns for barramundi (seabass, KBL, siakap) with Jeff was always interesting and has always intrigued me. The rig was just a simple leader line and a 2/0 or 1/0 hook with no split shot. Similar to what you would do at the fishing ponds, you would cast out your bait and spin it back. Except that there were alot more rocks here and the fish could be a lot more bigger. Fishing in Singapore has gotten tough over the years. Dwindling fish stocks, lack of fishing spots and the pandemic has made it worse. I do think that because international travel is so restricted now, the local fishing scene is actually quite intense. There are so many fishing boats out fishing in local waters now since we can't travel. So... here's a fishing spot which I accidentally found the other day while collecting some flower crabs from Great Harvest Fisheries . The spot which is off Lorong Halus used to be very inaccessible without proper roads but is rather accessible now with parking available. The fishing spot is no secret. In fact, it is quite open and with Google Maps, it's really easy to access. Do note that the jetty itself is private property and you can't fish there. However, you can fish at the sides. I went for some noodle rod exercise with my uncles and his million friends last weekend. I've always wanted to test my Silstar Teal noodle rod against the catfishes at the spot and so I brought along prawn meat to cast out and some live prawns for another rod... It was a long walk in and I could see it's just a matter of time before the spot is closed. Although the bangla workers there are very friendly... We can only go in to fish there because they are friendly! If they are not friendly, they have all the right to chase us out of there. Anyway, we arrived just when the tide is starting to rise. It's an excellent time for fishing as the water is calm, water column is low and you can see big fishes when they expose themselves. We saw a few great rushes at bait fishes by Barras and what I suspect were Giant Herrings. My uncle friend got a hit as soon as he lowered his live prawn into the water! I finally met up with Punggol Boy also known as Andy for a trip last weekend. It was a tiring weekend for me as I was at auntie pond the previous day. I called Weiyee along and we went early to get live prawns and meet up with Andy and even IBR at the spot. It was pretty quiet but we can see that the dam has made the place like a sort of washing machine. The fish will keep swimming around in circles and cannot get out... That's why it's so productive.. There were lots of by catch... but the best catch of the day was by ibr... He had a 11lbs barramundi on live prawns... The strangest catch was a squid on lure by me and an octopus by SH...... Weiyee finally has a chance to do some fishing and so we arranged for some last minute night fishing on Friday night but after the downpour in the afternoon, we changed our plans. Actually it was freshwater baiting and then surf casting but eventually we settled on crabbing. Grabbed all the crabbing stuff from my place and we did a quick drive down to some mangrove areas for crabbing. We thought we could still access the deep mangrove area but it seems the trees have all overgrown and inaccessible. So we settled for the more civilized area for crabbing and went about to do our setting up. We are using batu bait fish as bait. This is one of my favourite bait fish to use for crabbing as it is cheap, smelly, oily and lasts relatively long. I got many crabs on batu fish so i was confident of this bait. We setup a few sphere bubu cages and only one square bubu with the rest being the bamboo crab nets. For the bubus, we bashed as close to the mangrove as possible and threw them as deep in...
