Ah, the great outdoors. Short of being a dryad, those four words beautifully describe fishing in Merchong and Nenasi . Then you add some beef, lamb, tapah, soon hock, coral trout and cuttlefish, and you have the complete Merchong fishing experience. We returned to Merchong in 2024 for another two-day fishing trip with new friends. Their target was the humble coral trout, commonly known among local anglers as ang gao. I call it humble because coral trout are relatively common around the Merchong fishing grounds. We do not need to travel all the way to Tioman, Jubilee Reef or even Pulau Berhala to find them. Catching these tasty red groupers can be quite predictable when the conditions are right. You just need some luck and a well-presented bait. Not much of a catch report this time, just a relaxing Desaru bottom fishing trip with Ah Long Fishing from Tanjong Lompat. We travelled quite far offshore in search of bottom fish. In fact, we went so far out that we even saw the Ah Jiang Sportfisher boat fishing in the same general area! Bottom Fishing at Tanjong Lompat, Desaru The bottom fishing was good, although we lost a few larger fish during the trip. There were plenty of smaller nibblers around, and we released the fish below approximately 800g. The fish may not look especially large in the photographs, but most were actually nice table-sized specimens. It was a fun day of light-tackle fishing in Desaru , with enough bites to keep everyone occupied.
