Barramundi Fishing with Jeff on Prince of Peace

Few hours of casting. All fish are not wasted.

"Very long never go fishing leh... heightened alert coming, cannot fish already" followed by "Come let's go!"

When you have such fishing kakis like Jeff, a short few hours fishing getaway is always possible. We picked up some prawns and drinks for sharing and we were good to go. Casting live prawns for barramundi (seabass, KBL, siakap) with Jeff was always interesting and has always intrigued me. The rig was just a simple leader line and a 2/0 or 1/0 hook with no split shot. Similar to what you would do at the fishing ponds, you would cast out your bait and spin it back. Except that there were alot more rocks here and the fish could be a lot more bigger.

The spots that we are fishing for our target barramundi are shallow beachfronts with rocks and debris. The average depth was around 2 to 3 meters and the bigger fish would hang about the shallows, waiting to ambush baitfish.

The night started "fast" like the last trip and the giant herrings (tek ngor, ladyfish) quickly came to visit us. They weren't landed though as they threw hooks and we heaved a sigh of relief. Moving on... some snappers came along too and Ah Du caught a grouper on an Island Anglers rubber. I casted out right into the rocks and let my bait fall. Slow crank... let it fall again... and suddenly my line was moving upwards and going taut. I reeled in the slack line and gave a good set and a decent barramundi made some acrobatic splashes. Fish on! The St Croix baktao micro rod quickly coaxed the fish again and I casted out again... Boof! Another much bigger barramundi made an acrobatic splash and we all looked at each other to see who connected. But nobody did... probably someone's line got caught with the fish...

The luring guys caught something...

Wrapped up our quick fishing trip after that and on the way back to the club, we saw another group with their sampan fighting a good sized barramundi which was landed and by estimates could be around 4 to 5kg.

Ok... heightened alert... no worries... cleaned up the fish and we had pan fried barramundi steaks the next day!

Good size to eat. Too big hard to clean, too small no meat

Clean the insides, descale and fillet

Beautiful fillets. Barramundi scales are big so it makes things less messy.

Beautiful white and firm flesh. Bleeding the fish makes alot of difference!

With some plum sauce which provided abit of acidity

Beautiful white flesh. Fish was bled.
