Is Boat Squid Fishing (Eging) in Singapore Possible?

We should have scooped until morning!

Ok, I know the article is kinda like a click bait thing but I always wondered if we could catch squids in Singapore like the tourist boats do in places like Vietnam. Not using a squid jig/eging and whipping it like a Japanese egi pro but more like the touristy kind of squid fishing. You know, the kind that bring you out for a few hours and you just use a handline and squid jig to catch squid? I think it might be possible in Singapore and to even do it as a fishing charter if the squid season is good.

Generally, it seems like there is one main squid season in Singapore when you can get arrow head squid in numbers. End of the year (November to April) is usually a good time and Tuas is good place to scoop squids because they tend to congregate there. And in return, the Big Groupers or Gao Tuns tend to also come in. Coincidence? Not sure. I know scooping them (using a light source) is much easier and we usually do so when we are getting baits for doing night fishing for the golden snapper. But the touristy way of using handline and no brand squid jigs also does have some romantic appeal, at least for me...

Anyway, these thoughts were triggered in me when during a March 2022 night offshore fishing trip we managed to scoop around 7kg of squid in a few hours. The squid season was in full swing and we even scooped a few beltfish aka hairtail. We made the mistake of stopping to scoop more squid though. The fishing was not ideal and we didn't catch much fish. Supposedly, the fishes can't be bothered with our baits because there were too much squid around...

Time to do a squid fishing charter for tourists? Maybe... future bucket list.

The squid were filling up fast!

Small one generally is chomek and the big long ones are "torak". Torak are not spooky, in fact we caught some using our bare hands as they came to the squid of the boat!

The best containers...

Some "ang ka hei" also floated past and were scooped. This one was torched on the spot and landed in my stomach.

How could I resist?

Really beautiful golden snapper

We caught some kaci, teeboon too but only this fish was photo worthy.

And of course... after that, some squid game. And Tik Tok too...

Sotong mee!
@baktao We caught some baby squid during our #squidgame and got inspired. If you don't have time to do some #cooking ♬ original sound - Nigel Lian - baktao
