Fishing with Ah Orh (Boon Black) Fishing Charters (Berthed at Raffles Marina)

It’s been a few months and I’m catching up on my catch reports. Recently, I was invited to fish on the Boon Black Fishing Charter and subsequently booked another trip after that. Boon Black Fishing Charter is berthed at Raffles Marina and is actually made up of two separate boats – one captained by Ah Org (Black) and another by Ah Boon. Both of them are really easy going captains and this made fishing really relaxing.
Comfort Level 100
The first thing I noticed when I boarded the first time was the comfort level of the boat. It was spacious and had comfortable backrests and cushions. Simple bait trays, bait tubs and iceboxes were also arranged neatly which made things really organised. Boat should be a Pongga 28ft.
Big Grouper Culture Shock
During the trip at the start of the year, we went for Big Grouper (at Tuas) or what our local community calls “Tong Gas”. It was here that I was introduced to the big grouper culture. Not really a shock for me lah but I just felt my heart shatter when every 800g grouper was labelled as bait and throw into the bait well. Apparently, small groupers, emperors (leng chiam), tibuns and tuskfish were very good bait for the “Tong Gas”.
Quite Affordable
Upon calculation of the costs, I also realised that the fishing rate was actually quite affordable. The current costs are $580 for 4 kakis, $650 for 5 kakis and $700 for 6 kakis. This included the live prawns, drinking water and ice. He will also be able to issue you a complimentary parking ticket if you drive.
Catch Reports
Good? Bad? Definitely good not because of our total catch but because Ah Orh is one of those captains that can really find fish. He is also incredibly hardworking and a really entertaining guy once he gets turned on. His song playlist is also rather interesting…

What is the difference between the Kurau (Indian Threadfin) and Senangin (Blue Threadfin Salmon)?

This post aims to enable you to know the difference. Name and Terminology Kurau is known as Indian Giant Threadfin salmon/Kurau/黑午鱼/Orh Ngor Senangin is known as Blue Threadfin salmon/Senangin/白午鱼/Pek Ngor/Ngor Soon Eating Quality Kurau is known the more premium species and is a popular fish for maternity purposes as it is believed to boost milk supply for new mothers. It is rare and big sized fish are hard to come by these days. Generally costs more than Senangin. Senangin is less premium and is readily available in the market in various sizes. In case you all don't know yet, a new prawning pond has opened at 10 Neo Tiew Lane 2! Called Olden Days Prawning, the prawning pond is opened daily and 24 hours. What was the most surprising for me is their current price for prawning. They are doing it at 1 hour - $9.99, 2 hours - $15.99 and 3 hours - $19.99. Quite a good deal as these are way below prawning pond rates. The location isn't new and used to be operated by Ah Hua Fishing and Prawning . Fishing at Barelang Fishing Pond (with trip itinerary and tips), Batam
It's never easy for angler-couples with kids to go fishing. You bring the kid along, it doesn't really feel like quality fishing together. You leave the kid at home, you're basically confined to one day trips which can only mean fishing in Singapore. But... there's Batam too! At the now very famous Barelang Fishing Pond. It's a fairly inexpensive fishing venue, surrounded with nice restaurants, massage parlours, shopping malls and you bring rupiah. It's definitely easy to arrange too. I detail below three steps on how to arrange an affordable one day trip to Barelang Fishing Pond. 1. Marina South Singapore Fishing Spot (Eging and Shore Jigging Recce)
Marina South has always been a favourite fishing spot in Singapore. In the past, we would go settle our dinner at the Marina South buffet steamboat and then head off to the water breakers to crank deep diver lures. In fact, I remember a memory of having my popper being taxed from me one of those times we went luring there! Another fairly famous fishing spot were the freshwater ponds just next to the saltwater side. Quite a fair bit of haruan (snakehead) and tarpon in there! Ok back to the topic. I finally had time to go for a full recce of the Marina South fishing areas. It's quite amazing that there are no restrictions for fishing almost the entire Marina South coast and it makes shore casting, eging, ajing and microjigging so much more fun.
