Fun day with Changi Offshore Ah Fong
Been terribly busy these days with career and family so much that fishing isn't really important anymore. But... that's what all anglers say until they hooked one. Recently has been a tough time for me because I've been outwitted by the fishes on multiple occasions.
Today though no such incidents as the big ones weren't biting but I managed to score a decent sized grunter (guhood) on one of David's (Dactylus) new prototype jigs. I barely jigged 30 minutes with it and I was rewarded! It's a very effective jig and I reckon it will be a big hit - that's a respectable promotion for you.
Anyway, the usual Changi Offshore suspects were caught... not the best trip according to Ah Fong's standard catches this week but still great fun. Let's hope we can continue the fishing in Singapore and not face another lock-down...

Gills Fishing Pond (Singapore) at Punggol Marina Country Club
Gills fishing pond also known as defunct swimming pool pond I seldom visit fishing payponds in Singapore. The fishes are smelly, the rates are expensive and very often, it is crowded. Fishing can get really predictable too which really kills the joy of getting a surprise catch. So, be very surprised that I am blogging about a fairly new fishing pond - Gill's fishing pond. The pond is located inside Punggol Marina (Marina Country Club) and is built on swimming pool foundation! I always scoffed at the pond as I came back from fishing with Jimmy. How could someone enjoy fishing here - the pond was shallow and the high up build meant that the pond level was at about your waist level. This makes fishing rather awkward. I scoffed and scoffed until one fine day, our bunch of kakis had not much choice but to go there for a gathering and do some fishing. Fishing at SAF Yacht Club Sembawang
One of the best fishing spots in Singapore can be found SAF Yacht Club, Sembawang . In fact, because it is a restricted fishing area, the fish population is healthy. Is fishing allowed there? You can fish at the jetty but do beware of boaters and be safe. Members and guests can fish at the jetty while public can pay a small fee to fish. Do keep the place clean though. How to fish there? Most of the fishing can be done with live bait. You can drop down your bait or cast it out. Usually the fish that most people target are the barramundi (seabass/kbl), grouper, snapper and mangrove jacks. Sometimes you can also get ladyfish, tarpon and catfish. How to maximise your fishing package at Gills Fishing Pond?
Come at the right time, at the right price! The best package to take based on their current promotion is definitely the 9pm to 6am (next day) promotion at $60. This is 9 hours at $60 which amounts to $6.70 hourly (cheaper than prawning!). Gills allows you to "keep the hours" and requires that you top up a minimum of 1 hour ($30) when you want to redeem your remaining hours. The best time to fish would of course be the timings where they release fish. It's a pretty small, contained pond so not much retained fish from previous releases will linger for long. Here's a quick guide on how to utilise* the hours for the 9pm to 6am promotion. What is the difference between the Kurau (Indian Threadfin) and Senangin (Blue Threadfin Salmon)?

Name and Terminology Kurau is known as Indian Giant Threadfin salmon/Kurau/黑午鱼/Orh Ngor Senangin is known as Blue Threadfin salmon/Senangin/白午鱼/Pek Ngor/Ngor Soon Eating Quality Kurau is known the more premium species and is a popular fish for maternity purposes as it is believed to boost milk supply for new mothers.
