Jimmy Lim Changi Offshore with the family...

Image
It's been quite some time since I blogged... almost a month! Well, the next few posts will be trips on old man Jimmy so don't be too disturbed or bored! My dad and brother occasionally joins me for my trips to Changi Offshore usually on Ah Chong or Ah Long... drifting, baiting, chilling... that was their style. So when I decided to bring them on Jimmy's, I wasn't too sure at first! On Jimmy's you pay much more, but you get better service, more spots, faster travelling time and well, you get Jimmy... I was also not too sure that Jimmy's style was suitable for them. Jimmy employed a mixture of live prawns, madai, jigs... and the guys were true blue baiters so... The decision was vindicated as the guys got their fishes... KBLS! Or rather Barramundi or Seabass were getting caught! Call it beginner luck or what, but the smile on their faces were evident! Dad and Nick had not caught seabass before and they were somewhat intrigued! Why me again! He was sl...

Peacock Bass Luring at Choa Chu Kang

Image
True blue peacock bass are seldom found these days. With the popularity of Temensis these days, the aggressive Peacock Bass has been displaced as the trophy fish. It's not that I didn't like this... but the Temensis were less aggressive pound for pound. And we were happy after finding a healthy patch of them during Toman hunting. When all else fails, of course we target Peacock Bass no matter their sizes... because nothing gets us going more than a good Peacock! Small orange crankbaits were the choice lures that the fishes were aggressively hitting. A pity though that Toman heavy tackle was used! Having a good time with these feisty critters One more! And again! Double hook up! Recognize these locations? Inspiration drawn from news that a Peacock Bass was caught in saltwater off lorong halus recently...

Singapore's Favourite Snapper!

Image
In this post, I'm going to share about another common fish that we encounter on our Singapore shores or even regional waters. This fish is none other than the Golden Snapper (Ang Cho/Kim Cho/Ungah). The snapper family has many species and variants but what I actually want to share are the 3 main "species" or rather "types" that Singaporean fishos encounter locally. The fish is so popular with the local fishing community that many paypond operators bring in this fish locally to release into their fishing ponds! This is because the fish (be it wild or farmed) gives an excellent account of itself during the fight and it is reasonable eating even when from the farm. Here's a breakdown of the three broad types that you will encounter as you fish our Singapore shores. One may ask, is there a difference at all?!?! Farmed Golden Snapper is probably the type that is more encountered by pond fishing kakis and these fish are bred in fishing farm or kelong nets unt...

Singapore's Favourite Misunderstood Fish done with a 5C touch!

Image
What are Singaporean fishing kaki's most favourite fish or what fish can represent Singapore? That is a common question that many of us wonder. Many of us would point to the legend of Red Hill in which swordfish or rather Todaks were part of the story. For most of us, the Catfish or "Ah Seng" takes the cake as being the number one fish that most budding or even experienced anglers catch! Many species of the Catfish are caught from our shores regularly - they come in three broad categories to say simply. They are the Ikan Duri (forked tailed marine catfish (silver), Sembilang (Eel Tailed Catfish) and Belukang (Sergeant Major or Shit Seng). There are many other species such as the Jahan, Usat and so on but I'll leave that to the experts! Most of us (especially the Chinese) loath this fish as it does not taste great (apparently it is "smelly" and the fishy taste is very strong) when you do not know how to prepare it. Worse still, most Catfish give sluggish f...

Fishing with Dr Tan Kuanyang and Chef Jonathan Tan

Image
Jimmy (or Mimi) Lim's charter "IT'S Gr-R-Reat" has became my choice charters for Changi waters recently. Maybe it's because I'm biased or I just love to laugh too much but trips with him often tickle the soul. Countless stories are exchanged between the kakis and even if we heard them before, we still listen to them! Jimmy is a sincere charter captain (better not call him Boatman later he bring me catch ah seng) and this trip was no different as he extended his hospitality to KY and Chef. KY was a fisho that I known through my blog, we exchanged texts/Emails and finally got to meet each other on a Jimmy trip. Chef Jonathan was a long time friend but we did not have chance to fish because of his busy schedule. This is the beauty of fishing trips these days for me... It's a place you get to know people and to catch up with people... The three neon gays! With caps! The earlier part of the day was spent at Changi Naval Base waters and the fishing w...

Kayak Fishing Off Pasir Ris Beach

Image
Oh goody! The boy in me could finally try out real kayak fishing in Singapore as a friend kindly agreed to let me have a try out in his Kayak! Kayak fishing is consistently picking up pace in Singapore and so far, the authorities look to be very relaxed and supportive of the small community of Kayak fishing anglers in Singapore. I hopped into my friend's native watercraft Kayak at Pasir Ris beach as Boatman Shawn (who also bought his own kayak) led me out on a special experience. As we "launched" (a term used for getting our kayaks into the water from the beach) from the beach, we saw other kayakers taking to the water - some of which are stored at Pasir Ris beach watercross itself. Great to see local businesses support the community! Now, the term "launch" may seem a little heavy but I can assure you, it is no mean feat to "launch"... well except my friend lent me his kayak wheels too and off we go! There's nothing like Kayak fishing is there...
