Pulau Ubin Barramundi Luring and Changi Mangrove Jack Fishing

We joined experienced Singapore angler Jimmy Lim for a day of lure fishing around Pulau Ubin and Changi.

The fishing plan involved two different approaches. We first cast lures around the mangrove areas of Pulau Ubin in search of barramundi before trolling around Changi Carpark 7 and Changi Bayview for mangrove jack.

Barramundi Luring at Pulau Ubin

Pulau Ubin’s mangrove environment provides the type of structure commonly associated with barramundi. Fallen branches, mangrove edges, current lines and changes in water depth can all provide ambush points for predatory fish.

We worked artificial lures around the likely holding areas while fishing with Jimmy. Accurate casting was important because the fish could be positioned close to cover.

Barramundi are powerful fish, especially immediately after the hook-up. Anglers need to remain prepared for sudden runs, jumps and rapid changes in direction.

Tips for Mangrove Barramundi Luring

  • Cast close to mangrove edges and visible structure.
  • Look for drains, drop-offs and areas where currents meet.
  • Vary the retrieve speed until the fish respond.
  • Pause the lure occasionally to imitate an injured baitfish.
  • Use suitable leader material around abrasive structure.
  • Be prepared to apply pressure before the fish reaches cover.

Mangrove Jack Trolling Around Changi

After the Pulau Ubin luring session, we switched tactics and trolled around Changi Carpark 7 and Changi Bayview for mangrove jack.

Mangrove jack are aggressive predators that are often associated with structure. Although they may not grow as large as barramundi, they are powerful fighters and can quickly return to cover after taking a lure.

Trolling allowed us to cover more water while keeping the lures moving through likely fish-holding areas. The lure’s swimming depth, trolling speed and distance behind the boat all affected the presentation.

Tips for Trolling for Mangrove Jack

  • Use lures that swim at the appropriate depth.
  • Check that each lure is tracking correctly beside the boat.
  • Adjust the amount of line behind the boat to change the presentation.
  • Concentrate around structure, current lines and depth changes.
  • Keep the drag firm enough to stop a fish from reaching cover.
  • Inspect leaders and hooks regularly for damage.

Barramundi vs Mangrove Jack Fishing

Both barramundi and mangrove jack can be targeted with artificial lures, but the fishing approach may differ depending on the location and available structure.

  • Barramundi: Often targeted by casting around mangroves, drains, drop-offs and current lines.
  • Mangrove jack: Commonly associated with structure and may be targeted by casting or trolling suitable diving lures.
  • Barramundi fight: Powerful runs, jumps and sudden changes in direction.
  • Mangrove jack fight: Fast, aggressive runs towards nearby cover.

Fishing Around Pulau Ubin and Changi

The waters around Pulau Ubin and Changi offer a mixture of mangrove, coastal and channel fishing opportunities. Fish activity will depend on the tide, current, weather and availability of baitfish.

Anglers should also remain aware of boat traffic, restricted areas and changing weather conditions when fishing in these waters.

Final Thoughts

This trip provided a good mixture of Singapore barramundi luring and mangrove jack trolling. It was also a valuable opportunity to fish with Jimmy Lim and observe how he approached two different target species.

Whether casting around the Pulau Ubin mangroves or trolling through the Changi waters, lure placement and presentation remained important throughout the trip.

Marina South Singapore Fishing Spot (Eging and Shore Jigging Recce)

Marina South has always been a favourite fishing spot in Singapore. In the past, we would go settle our dinner at the Marina South buffet steamboat and then head off to the water breakers to crank deep diver lures. In fact, I remember a memory of having my popper being taxed from me one of those times we went luring there! Another fairly famous fishing spot were the freshwater ponds just next to the saltwater side. Quite a fair bit of haruan (snakehead) and tarpon in there! Ok back to the topic. I finally had time to go for a full recce of the Marina South fishing areas. It's quite amazing that there are no restrictions for fishing almost the entire Marina South coast and it makes shore casting, eging, ajing and microjigging so much more fun.
