Lorong Halus Jetty Fishing Spot in Singapore

Image
Fishing in Singapore has gotten tough over the years. Dwindling fish stocks, lack of fishing spots and the pandemic has made it worse. I do think that because international travel is so restricted now, the local fishing scene is actually quite intense. There are so many fishing boats out fishing in local waters now since we can't travel. So... here's a fishing spot which I accidentally found the other day while collecting some flower crabs from Great Harvest Fisheries . The spot which is off Lorong Halus used to be very inaccessible without proper roads but is rather accessible now with parking available. The fishing spot is no secret. In fact, it is quite open and with Google Maps, it's really easy to access. Do note that the jetty itself is private property and you can't fish there. However, you can fish at the sides. There is ample space and it's not that crowded as well. For information, the spot is right next to the "Commando Camp / Pasir Ris Camp" an...

What is the difference between the Kurau (Indian Threadfin) and Senangin (Blue Threadfin Salmon)?

Image
This post is meant as a supplement to this Batu Pahat catch report . Information and pictures taken from #fishidlessonsbydavidho. Did you know that the Kurau and Senangin are totally different? This post aims to enable you to know the difference. Name and Terminology Kurau is known as Indian Giant Threadfin salmon/Kurau/黑午鱼/Orh Ngor Senangin is known as Blue Threadfin salmon/Senangin/白午鱼/Pek Ngor/Ngor Soon Eating Quality Kurau is known the more premium species and is a popular fish for maternity purposes as it is believed to boost milk supply for new mothers. It is rare and big sized fish are hard to come by these days. Generally costs more than Senangin. Senangin is less premium and is readily available in the market in various sizes. I have also seen that farming for it can be quite successful.  Size Differences If you do a Google search, you will realise that both can grow quite big. However, this is not a good comparison as geographically, there are differe...

3 ways to give a boost to your fishing catches using tenya jigs

Image
How do we effectively use the tenya jig the right way is something many people ask me. Of course, everyone knows that we use a live prawn here and we drop it to the bottom of the seabed. Most fishing folks do that and already catch fish with the tenya jig. So what's really so special about it? Well, in my humble experiences with the tenya jig, I found there are three ways to "accelerate" the bites and get more fish. Before you go into the the three ways, learn how to hook a live prawn on the tenya by watching this video . 1. Cast and bounce  A very common way that most people use is using the tenya to cover more ground. This often happens as the boat is drifting. Casting the opposite direction to where the current is heading will give you good ground to cover. As the tenya returns to you, lift and bounce( releasing line after the lift) to try and locate the snags and caves in which the fishes are hiding in. Snag rate is high using this method but if you're...

3 tips if you're fishing for the first time at Pandan Reservoir

Image
Clear requirements now Just a few months ago, I wrote that we should give the Singaporean authorities a break when it comes to illegal fishing in reservoirs but never in my most intimate dreams would I have expected PUB to then open up more fishing grounds in our local reservoirs. What’s more was that they didn’t just open a small section or platform (like they did previously with most of the legal fishing areas), they opened up massive sections of fishing areas in certain reservoirs like the popular Pandan Reservoir. I had to admit that the news struck me weirdly. On one hand, I was concerned that there should have been more done to evaluate the whole fishing environment and system before committing to such a big change. I.e. opening a reservoir is one thing but how do you maintain fish stocks are another. Being a seasoned newbie angler also informed me that one should definitely fish at the opened areas as soon as possible. It was not that there wouldn’t be any fish after i...
