Meaty Indonesian Mud Crabs from B&B Fishery Services

Image
Meaty Indonesian Mud Crabs! My thoughts on Sri Lanka Mud Crab vs Indonesia Mud Crab To be honest, most folks in Singapore don't really choose mud crabs down to the exact breed and location. Most of us just go to restaurants and order the crabs, bearing in mind the usual market rate. However, this is not always recommended as there are so many kinds of crab available in the market. For example, crabs from Indonesia, Sri Lanka (or India), Vietnam, Philippines and so on. The grades do differ and when you are going to buy your own to cook, you might want to take note. There are quite a number of resources online and nothing Google can't solve! The way of tying and the material used (vine, rattan, raffia) are tell tale signs of where the crab is from. Sri Lanka crabs tend to have the vine kind of material. Look at the tying material. This usually gives hints to where the crab is from. I actually love the Indonesian mud crabs! They are cheap, mostly meaty and of good quality perhaps ...

Large Flower Crabs and Mussels from Great Harvest Fisheries

Image
Give me a choice and I will pick good flower crabs over mud crabs any day. Flower crabs are easy to eat (you can use your hands or teeth to crack the shell), super sweet and if you get solid ones, they can be meaty! But of course, I'm also spoilt by being a seafood enthusiast and I only eat big flower crabs... Seafood boil! Ingredients were beer, chinese wine, garlic and ginger Ordered some from Great Harvest Fisheries at decent prices ($25/kg for large, $20/kg for medium) and wasn't disappointed as the crabs were meaty and fresh (they were alive lol). Live flower crabs rarely have issues and I had them as a seafood boil with other shellfish such as mussels, gong gong and clams. Really hassle free and quick way to prepare seafood. The large crabs were around 250g to 350g and although they weren't the biggest I've eaten, I was still happy :) The large ones were 250g to 300g Crab seafood boil Their mussels were also good. I was quite concerned as local green mussels usual...

Holy Crab! Great, meaty crabs with plenty of cooking options

Image
Nicely decorated restaurants with hype and lots of influencer/blogger reviews don't always mean that food is good. I learned that the hard way at Orchid Live Seafood . So I wasn't going to take any risks with my birthday lunch from the wife and humbly requested that we try Holy Crab at their new Capitol Singapore location. I've had their crabs for delivery during the circuit breaker period and they were good so I was pretty excited at the thought of trying it "LIVE"! We tried a couple of dishes during our time here and we made it a point not to try those we had before. Reviews below: Live Crab We really loved the Green Mumba Crab and Sauna Crab in our last order but we went for something new this time. We tried "Otak" and "Orgasmic". Otak was basically coconut milk, sambal and Orgasmic was salted egg. Crab was 2.5kg (or 2.2kg IIRC) and we thought it was really nice they could cook it two styles without any extra charges. This way we can try mor...

Four Reasons Not to Visit Orchid Live Seafood at HomeTeamNS Khatib

Image
I've always wanted to try Orchid Live Seafood after seeing various social media sponsored posts and influencer sponsored posts about how good this place is. Saw too many lobster porridge and this "steven chicken" advertisements haha. As someone who loves cooking crustaceans and seafood, especially in seafood broth, I was really looking forward to it. Finally, the day came to celebrate a birthday so we booked the place thinking that we can indulge since it was a special occasion. Initially, the food was kind of average but as we ate, each dish really got worse and really underwhelming for the high price that we paid. Can see why their place is only half filled on a Sunday evening. Below are some reasons NOT to eat there because of the food. Service was average, nothing to complain about. 1. Pushy servers; micro mini lobsters in the default lobster porridge There were about 7 or 8 mini lobsters so you can really have a sense of how small they were since total was about 1kg ...

Terrible Experience at Greenwood Fish Market Quayside Isle

Image
My "Medium" King Salmon from Greenwood Fish Market I seldom am a fussy eater. I generally eat all kinds of food and as long as it's relatively fresh, I can forgive small issues such as service and even subtle points in the food preparation. However, I got a rather shocking and terrible experience at Greenwood Fish Market Quayside Isle recently because everything was bad (ok, the calamari was decent) so much so that I wrote reviews immediately after dining in. I mean, for a meal that costs $300 for two, it surely deserved a little more standards. I'm rarely that "vengeful" but it was too much... It's safe to say that I will never visit this restaurant again.  "Lost" Servers The servers were lost if I could put it nicely. When I asked for recommendations on the oysters and what would be a good mix, the server just said "order this and this and this" without explaining why. I went ahead and ordered the three kinds recommended anyway and ...

Again having super meaty flower crabs from B&B Fishery Services!

Image
Why are crabs so tasty and delicious? Why are flower crabs so delicious? I had another go at B&B Fishery Service's extra large and meaty flower crabs and I wasn't disappointed. In fact, this round was even better as ALL the crabs were meaty and of consistent quality. Remember I told them that were was one slightly water crab ? Seems like they took my feedback seriously and made sure quality was 100% good. The current batch of crabs (I'm told) are live crabs and delivered fresh right after harvest so there's no soaking in ice or transferring to markets to try and get them sold. This ensures that the crabs are as fresh as they can be and anyone who knows their crabs know that the meat quality deteriorates very quickly. In fact, once the crabs die, the deterioration process begins! Kudos to B&B for taking care of this very delicate but important challenge. Okay I talk too much. Here are the photos that I took! Recipe was just simple hua tiao wine, salt and...
