Tuas Night Offshore Fishing with Wreckhunter

Image
Looks can be deceiving. This stingray turned out to be the food highlight of the trip. It had been almost two years since our previous squid fishing trip with Wreckhunter , so everyone was looking forward to catching some chomek. More accurately, we were looking forward to eating live chomek with Maggi. Fishing was almost secondary. We prepared our night fishing gear at the Republic of Singapore Yacht Club, commonly known as RSYC, before setting off for the waters around Tuas. Departing from RSYC brought back plenty of memories because I have joined many Singapore fishing charters from the club over the years. Tuas Night Fishing Trip Details Fishing area: Tuas, Singapore Departure point: Republic of Singapore Yacht Club Fishing charter: Wreckhunter Main target: Chomek squid Live bait: Freshly caught chomek Other catches: Stingray, green-eye squid, octopus and assorted fish species Preparing our fishing gear at RSYC before departing for Tua...

Jeju Hirasuzuki Fishing Guide: Blackfin Seabass in Korea

Image
Our hirasuzuki fishing experience on Jeju Island, South Korea. I never imagined that I would go fishing in Korea. When the opportunity to fit some fishing into our Jeju family holiday appeared, I could not say no. The goal was to catch and eat hirasuzuki, commonly known in English as blackfin seabass. I had heard mixed opinions about its fighting ability, but I was extremely curious about how a wild Korean hirasuzuki would taste. To make the trip possible, I engaged Hyunwook, also known as Duke, as my fishing guide in Jeju . He speaks English, knows the local shore fishing locations and provided the equipment needed for the trip. Jeju Hirasuzuki Fishing Trip Details Location: Jeju Island, South Korea Fishing base: Seogwipo Main target: Hirasuzuki, or blackfin seabass Fishing style: Night shore luring and rock fishing Guide: Hyunwook, also known as Duke Equipment: Provided by the fishing guide Trip type: Fishing experience during a family holiday C...

Ah Fong Fishing in September 2023

Image
I couldn't make it for this trip but the live updates from the guys were very exciting. They finished their prawns after lunch and had to go to the farm to top up prawns.  Beautiful snapper. Who says jigging not possible at Changi? We hereby named him ang cho kiat~! Baiters didn't xia suay also lah Kiat was the hero on this trip, scoring a good sized ang cho aka golden snapper on jig. Purist jigging style came up tops!

Ah Fong Changi Fishing in August 2023

Image
It's been some time since we hit a decent haul off Changi waters. So this one really felt sweet. The most effective fishing method was fishing right off the bottom with tenya and bottom hugging techniques.

Sam Law Fishing for Sagai 2023

Image
Behold... on this trip, we had purposely sought out sagais because we were bored and wanted to just harvest fish. We were so desperate and only bought 1/2 kg of live prawns which we didn't really use anyway.  Lawrence the ang gao whisperer Ah Bao's "feather" Gao on jig! Caught it on feather! Strangely though, we caught all sorts of interesting reef fish before the "sagai" fishing started. Ah Bao even caught a coral trout on what he called "mao" or feather. We also used sabiki rigs to catch plenty of baby yellowtail barracuda aka kamasu. These are super tasty by the way, but it is a story for another day. When the current was about to pick up, off we want for sagai. Sam was fairly confident and recommended "long-line" and sabiki jigging. Long-line usually refers to a very long horizontal presentation (think 4ft of leader) with a feathered jig or hook at the end. One would just let it flow out and impart a jig stop motion to imitate flappin...
