Fish Farming in Pasir Ris not Sustainable

Image
The below opinion was done up hastily in response to the article on plankton bloom in Pasir Ris . There will be no extensive research figures given to support this article as the author strongly believes that credible experiences that engage are far more reliable than figures in a modern world. In addition, figures on fishery and fishery research are fairly limited in Singapore waters. This opinion should not be taken as a scholarly article or reference but merely as an abrupt ranting with regards to a recent issue.  A beautiful sun sets over a lone fish farm in Pasir Ris After yet another plankton bloom which sent the fish farms reeling (pun intended), it’s clear that Fish Farming in Pasir Ris needs to be reviewed. How long does the government intend to nurture such a venture? In this opinion, I shall share some personal experiences (in the tiny shoes of an angler) that may come as a surprise to many whom are not on the ground.   We farm for demand and not hunger ...

Pandan Reservoir Belida

Image
Every lunar new year I would set aside some time to catch some fish and it seems that I still have it! Although it was a slow and windy night, I managed to hit this juvenile Belida on white rabbit rubber lure while luring at the Pandan Reservoir legal area. Reel used to bring up the fish was my 10 year old Daiwa Caldia Kix 2000 which has been with me forever and catching fish for me even till this day. Spooled 6lbs Suffix 832 on the reel and paired it with a Shimano Bass Rise 4-8lbs. My old buddy - Caldia Kix 2000 It was really pure luck as earlier on I had another similar sized Belida chase my lure (Zman super tough ghost shad) all the way to the jetty platform and turn away at the last minute. Beautiful Knife fish AKA Belida for the night Awesome to hit CNY fish! Pandan Reservoir though over fished, is still producing some good catches for all the lurers in Singapore and hope this continues!

Madai Drift Fishing with Jimmy Lim

Image
I very seldom blog these days because it is so much faster to get people to engage with me directly on my Facebook but the blog can still serve as information to old relevant knowledge, trip reports with more photos and insights that can only be gathered from writing. So I guess, Jimmy from Punggol Marina must be so grateful to me that I am writing about him again! Fishing with Jimmy and his baby Behold! The best boatman/skipper/charter captain/RADM of the Singapore fishing scene.... but the truth is that for this Changi Offshore, we had a very stressful trip as we couldn't catch anything before late afternoon. The trip to Johor Shoal and Changi Naval Base proved fruitless as the wind got in our way and fishing was tough. We only managed an ang go li and puffer fish! We started off with high spirits But halfway through... I guess if one can get a pufferfish on jig, that really means the sea is full of them! Even a cast at the usual breakers for pelagics prove...

Native Watercraft Singapore Kayak Fishing Competition 2014

Image
It's not everyday that you get to go Kayak Fishing in Singapore. Perhaps that's the reason why many are still ambivalent when it comes to going Kayak Fishing. To make things worse, it's also not everytime that you go out Kayak Fishing in Singapore and get a good fish! But things change when you suddenly get invited to a closed door Kayak Fishing Competition in Singapore aptly titled Native Fishing League 2014. The very thought of participating in a League would stroke most fishing egos or even mildly excite the tightly cased ones. But yeah... suddenly the thought of launching our Kayaks at Pasir Ris Beach Watercross at 7am didn't seem like an impossible task. Well.... at least for those 3 weeks of the league. Kayak fishing may seem glamorous but it really is a game of passion The fishing league was held on every Saturday for 3 weeks and a mish mash of rules and bonus catches were stipulated by the organizers. Apparently, this was a beta league and plans to includ...

Famous Singapore Fishing Charter Captain Jimmy Lim loses a good fish on Micro Jig

Image
To be honest with you, this video has very little educational stuff to learn from but we just love the look of Changi Offshore Fishing boatman and fishing guru Jimmy Lim when he loses his fish amidst all our bantering! Serves you right for using light tackle and micro jigs to get the fish! Whahaha... But what a hook up in dirty muddy water at Changi! Shows us there is still hope for fishing in Singapore waters!

Drifting Techniques for Singapore Offshore Fishing

Image
Drifting during Singapore offshore fishing - Be it Changi Offshore or Southern Islands is a very basic but commonly used technique. Beginners often don't get it and make basic mistakes. Hope that by posting this video, everyone can have better understanding and catch more fish! Use this technique when using paternoster (Apollo) rigs, Madai jigs, Maprawn jigs and you will lesson your chances of snagging (sangoat)! Happy drifting! Haibin Prawning at Jurong Hill (Jurong Birdpark)

Image
Finally! A Prawning post... Everyone's itchy for some prawning fun these days but the location that you can do prawning with good catch rate seems to be so few these days... That's why I was pleasantly surprised that Haibin Jurong prawning ponds had good sized, big blue mountain and thai prawns! The quantity was not amazing as compared to the old Bishan Haibin but it's always size over quantity for me! Strangely v good size hor? I had a prawning catch up session with a friend and during the 1st hour we were hitting prawns like crazy.... I think all of our 20-30pcs of prawns were hit in the 1st hour. After that the prawns stopped biting! not pro also look pro! Good beer to go with prawning Does prawning require patience? As usual, normal prawning tips apply... prawn near the centre pump and sides will never go wrong! The prawns were cooked on the spot with the BBQ..... probably this is what most likely happens after every Singapore prawning session... ha...
