Prawning At Haibin Bishan on Christmas!

Over the festive Christmas and New Year period, I introduced some friends to prawn fishing over at Haibin Bishan (Address Details can be found on the link). Haibin Bishan is one the better places to try your luck at prawn fishing because of the crowd and longetivity of this prawn fishing joint. The fact that so many people do their prawning there means that the management will always release prawns so it's up to the individual to be skillfull enough to catch the prawns! I've heard lots of complaints about people not catching prawns there but I firmly believe one should first learn the basics and tips of prawning before complaining!
After parking our cars (it's free parking at Haibin Bishan btw), we made our way to the prawning area and some of my friends were suprised at how clean and "hip" the place was. There was a beer garden, zhi char seafood stall and even the fish spa thing.
Frankly speaking, till this day I couldn't determine what's the difference between the bottom four ponds at the lower level of Haibin Bishan compared to the two ponds near the entrance. We made our way to the bottom four ponds on the hunch that it is better to rotate between four ponds than two! My friends were all newbies to prawning so some of us shared rods while some of us took our own rods for 3 hrs. Prawning rates are at the usuall rate of 3 hours $33.
It took awhile to get us started but we started getting out prawns as time went by. I slowly went through some prawning tips and basics to my friends while trying to catch prawns for the group for the BBQ later! Newbies to prawning should either wait longer and use the "lifting" method which is basically just lifting the rod or they can use the "striking" method which most people do it wrongly. They either strike too forcefully or think that they striked but what they did was a lift. To strike successfully, a quick flick of the wrist is all that is needed!
Prawning is great for couples and where guys can pick up girls as well! A good tip will be for guys to act all macho and help the girl remove the prawn from the hook!
Another tip of prawning is the timing of prawn feeding/releasing times. Often, prawning kakis would be very excited when fresh batches of prawns are released into the pond. This according to my observation is a misleading reaction. Prawns usually feed only after some time they are being released - for the first 30 minutes or so, prawns need to get used to their surroundings and very often you will see them swimming on the surface etc. The so called float movements are usually from the prawns when they brush against the line!
The prawn fishing place will then release the prawns at a carefully calculated timing in which customers time may be 2 hours 45 minutes so that customers will want to extend the time! So a customer extends the time and it is now 3 hours 15 minutes before the prawn starts to bite and now another walk in customer starts prawning and reaps the rewards of the feeding prawns! This usually explains the good bite rate for the initial one hour for the new customer but after the 2nd hour, the prawns stop feeding. At the 2nd hour 30 minutes, new batches of prawns are released...
In conclusion, true experience really counts in judging if the prawns will feed and you can plan your timing such that your timing covers more feeding times - etc you can "keep your timing" and go for a meal when the prawning is sluggish and come back later at a fresh feeding interval! And the best thing is that if you apply this to Haibin, you have four ponds and if you are good at it, you only prawn at the ponds in which the prawns are feeding! All these may take some time to absorb and some prawning time before you get the trick but it is a very important theory in prawning!
Anyway back to prawning... I guess we didn't really do that well. We took a total of 3 rods and only managed to land about 40 - 50 prawns? The prawns are really very small these days so it is a rather measly catch! But the prawns were enough to let my friends have their first taste of fresh BBQ freshwater prawns/yabby/blue mountain prawns for the first time!
Freshly BBQ-ed prawns!
The steps to BBQ are easy
1) The fire
2) Using satay sticks to pierce the prawns from the tail
3) Doing a final washing of the prawns or pulling out legs/pincers if you wish
4) Rubbing a thin layer of salt on the prawns for taste and killing bacteria
And that ends a rather more tips based prawning post than an actual outing but I hope these prawning tips will prove useful for our prawning fanatics and those folks that Email me questions on how to do prawning and the best baits for prawning!
Cheers!

Basic Introduction to Prawning: Simple Tips & Tricks
Foreword and Disclaimer My first encounter with prawning dated back to 2002. Back then, I hooked up my first prawn near the prawning ponds beside the Downtown East chalets at Pasir Ris. Back then, it was something like beginner's luck but after prawning for awhile, you'll realise that you will need skill as well as luck to have a good prawning catch. Through hard work and observation, I improved my prawning strategies and tactics and after some sessions of almost 70-80% hookup rate, I somewhat graduated from newbie stage to amateur stage. I would like to share with you guys some very basic prawning tips and trip. But a fair warning though. Prawning is addictive and it can only get worst once you get more prawns. When you are a newbie, you want to hook your first prawn...you want to get your first 10pcs... when you graduate you want to hit 30 in an hour...next is 50 in an hour... This post has since been updated and refreshed as of 25 March 2017. Prawning Equipmen
What is the difference between the Kurau (Indian Threadfin) and Senangin (Blue Threadfin Salmon)?
This post is meant as a supplement to this Batu Pahat catch report . Information and pictures taken from #fishidlessonsbydavidho. Did you know that the Kurau and Senangin are totally different? This post aims to enable you to know the difference. Name and Terminology Kurau is known as Indian Giant Threadfin salmon/Kurau/黑午鱼/Orh Ngor Senangin is known as Blue Threadfin salmon/Senangin/白午鱼/Pek Ngor/Ngor Soon Eating Quality Kurau is known the more premium species and is a popular fish for maternity purposes as it is believed to boost milk supply for new mothers. It is rare and big sized fish are hard to come by these days. Generally costs more than Senangin. Senangin is less premium and is readily available in the market in various sizes. I have also seen that farming for it can be quite successful. Size Differences If you do a Google search, you will realise that both can grow quite big. However, this is not a good comparison as geographically, there are differences in s
New Prawning Pond in Singapore for 2024: Olden Days Prawning
In case you all don't know yet, a new prawning pond has opened at 10 Neo Tiew Lane 2! Called Olden Days Prawning, the prawning pond is opened daily and 24 hours. What was the most surprising for me is their current price for prawning. They are doing it at 1 hour - $9.99, 2 hours - $15.99 and 3 hours - $19.99. Quite a good deal as these are way below prawning pond rates. The location isn't new and used to be operated by Ah Hua Fishing and Prawning . Fishing at Barelang Fishing Pond (with trip itinerary and tips), Batam
It's never easy for angler-couples with kids to go fishing. You bring the kid along, it doesn't really feel like quality fishing together. You leave the kid at home, you're basically confined to one day trips which can only mean fishing in Singapore. But... there's Batam too! At the now very famous Barelang Fishing Pond. It's a fairly inexpensive fishing venue, surrounded with nice restaurants, massage parlours, shopping malls and you bring rupiah. It's definitely easy to arrange too. I detail below three steps on how to arrange an affordable one day trip to Barelang Fishing Pond. 1. Pre-book a trusted driver with car for your one day trip There are many operators and drivers around. Just search around in Facebook and you'll find plenty. It is always a good idea to pre-book one as you'll be assured you have transport on that day! My driver was Aan +6281268187673 and he has WhatsApp. The fee to book Aan is $60 per day. Note that there are cheaper o
Marina South Singapore Fishing Spot (Eging and Shore Jigging Recce)
Marina South has always been a favourite fishing spot in Singapore. In the past, we would go settle our dinner at the Marina South buffet steamboat and then head off to the water breakers to crank deep diver lures. In fact, I remember a memory of having my popper being taxed from me one of those times we went luring there! Another fairly famous fishing spot were the freshwater ponds just next to the saltwater side. Quite a fair bit of haruan (snakehead) and tarpon in there! Ok back to the topic. I finally had time to go for a full recce of the Marina South fishing areas. It's quite amazing that there are no restrictions for fishing almost the entire Marina South coast and it makes shore casting, eging, ajing and microjigging so much more fun. We explored three spots today and I think we sort of regretted not bringing some bait... Below are some of the areas with Google map pins and what I think of the spots.
